Tucked away in the cloud-kissed highlands of eastern Bhutan, the remote highland village of Merak bursts into bloom each spring with one of the kingdom’s most enchanting festivals. The Rhododendron Festival, held amid yak-dotted pastures and alpine trails, is a dazzling tribute to both nature’s brilliance and the proud Brokpa people who call this region home.
Here, over 46 species of wild rhododendrons blanket the hillsides in waves of crimson, gold, pink, and white, transforming the landscape into a living canvas. But the festival is more than just a floral spectacle. It is an invitation to step into the world of Bhutan’s semi-nomadic highlanders and experience a way of life untouched by time.
Why This Festival is Like No Other
Unlike Bhutan’s famous tshechus (maks dance festivals) rooted in monastic traditions, the Merak Rhododendron Festival is a celebration of ecology, heritage, and community. Held each April, just as the rhododendrons reach peak bloom, it brings together guided flower treks, cultural pageantry, and warm Brokpa hospitality.
During the festival, you can hike through ancient rhododendron forests where rare blooms like the blood-red Rhododendron arboreum and snow-white Rhododendron kesangiae thrive. You can witness the Brokpa people perform yak dances, chant songs, and demonstrate time-honored crafts like wool-spinning with yak hair. You can also sample a range of local highland delicacies.
You can wander blooming ridgelines with your camera in hand, every trail is a burst of color and biodiversity. Spend the night in a stone-and-wood highland home, swap stories by the fire, and wake to mist drifting over flower-filled meadows. Watch as herders prepare their majestic yaks for seasonal migration, loading them with colorful saddles and supplies.

Getting There
From Trashigang, it is a 6–7 hour drive across winding mountain passes to reach Merak. The final stretch is off-road, bumpy, but unforgettable.
