1. When is the best time to visit Bhutan?
Bhutan receives majority of the tourists in the spring months of March, April and May and fall months of September, October and November as major festivals are celebrated in these period. Hence these months are considered peak travelling season.
However if tourists are not particularly interested in the festivals and plan on just exploring Bhutan, we suggest you to plan your trip during the lean period.
2. What is the SDF and how is it used?
The Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) is a crucial daily levy paid by visitors to Bhutan, aimed at supporting the nation’s long-term development. Funds collected are invested in vital projects such as healthcare, education, infrastructure, environmental conservation, cultural preservation, and boosting local businesses, ensuring sustainable growth and preserving Bhutan’s renowned forest cover and carbon-neutral status. This fee also helps maintain the tranquility and unique experiences that attract visitors, reinforcing Bhutan’s commitment to sustainable tourism and environmental stewardship since opening to the world in 1974.
3. How much is the SDF?
The Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) varies by nationality and age, with adults from most countries paying USD 100 per night, except for India where Indian nationals pay Nu. 1,200 per night with children aged 6 to 12 paying Nu. 600, and children under 6 paying nothing. Non-Indian children under 6 also pay nothing, while those aged 6 to 12 pay USD 50 per night. This tiered structure is designed to accommodate different age groups and nationalities, with Indian nationals subject to a different currency and fee structure
4. What is the weather like in Bhutan?
Weather in Bhutan varies in different region. The climate ranges from sub-tropical in the lower altitude to alpine in the north. Southern and Eastern Bhutan enjoys a subtropical climate and are generally warmer and humid. The temperature in the capital city of Thimphu ranges from -2.5 degrees Celsius in winter to 25 degrees Celsius in summer.
5. What flights are available and which airports can I depart for Bhutan?
Only Druk Air and Bhutan Airlines operate an inbound flight to Paro International Airport in Paro Bhutan from India (New Delhi, Calcutta, Guwahati and Bagdogra, Bodh gaya) Dhaka Bangladesh, Bangkok Thailand, Dubai, Kathmandu and Singapore.
6. Can I visit Bhutan on my own? Is it mandatory to book my trip through a local tour operator?
Unless you are a citizen of Bangladesh, India or Maldives, the Government regulation mandates that you must book your trip through a local tour operator.
7. How much does the visa cost?
There is a one-off fee of US$40 for the processing of your application. This is payable at the same time as your Sustainable Development Fee (SDF), as part of the process of submitting your visa application.
8. Do I need a VISA to visit Bhutan? How do I apply for a tourist Visa?
With the exception of Indian, Bangladeshi and Maldivian, all tourists visiting Bhutan must apply for a tourist visa prior to their arrival to Bhutan. Tourist Visa can be processed through a local tour operator.
You will need to submit a duly filled Visa form, scanned copy of your passport (with at least a validity of 6 months) and pass photo size photograph and we will apply on your behalf.
9. Is it safe to tarvel to Bhutan ?
Bhutan is generally a very safe destination for travelers, including solo visitors, with low crime rates; however, travelers should remain vigilant about personal belongings and exercise caution around stray dogs and wild animals. The country’s natural environment can pose safety risks such as flooding and landslides, especially during the monsoon season from June to September, which may disrupt transportation and services, so it’s advisable to check local updates and advisories before traveling.
