Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive Paro |Transfer to Thimphu, 54 Km, 1hr 30min
During the journey, one will experience breath-taking view of Mount Everest, Kanchenjunga and other famous Himalayan peaks including the sacred Jumolhari and Mount Jichu Drake in Bhutan. On arrival at Paro International Airport, you will be greeted by our representative and transfer to Thimphu, the capital city of Bhutan. The road leads through the Paro valley to the confluence of Paro and Thimphu rivers at Chuzom. A short way beyond, on the left is the Tachogang Lhakhang built in 15th century by Thangthong Gyelpo, a trader who first introduce iron bridges in Bhutan. On arrival in Thimphu, you will visit the King’s Memorial Chorten (built in memory of the third King of Bhutan); Traditional paper factory, visit Buddha Shakyamuni statue measures in at a height of 51.5 meters, overlooking Thimphu valley. It is said to be one of the largest bronze statues of Buddha in the world, and visit the Post office, and get a copy personalize stamp if you wish, and visit centenary farmers market. Later in the evening, you can stroll through Thimphu city and absorb the lifestyle of the people. Overnight stay in Thimphu.
Day 2: Thimphu to Punakha, 76 Km/ 2-3 hours
After breakfast this morning, enjoy the scenic drive to Punakha with a stop at Dochu La pass (3,100 meters), where on a clear day you can get spectacular views of the Eastern Himalayas. From the pass, you will embark on a hike along a segment of the Trans Bhutan Trail, referred to as the Divine Madman Trail, for approximately 3 hour towards Lumitsawa. Beginning at Dochu La, you will descend into the neighboring valley and connect with this historic trail, following in the footsteps of Drukpa Kuenley, the Divine Madman, who arrived in Bhutan from Tibet in the 15th century to carry out his mission of eliminating evil energies. As you traverse through untouched, predominantly unexplored natural landscapes, you will come across a diverse array of rhododendrons, magnolias, oaks, and birches, accompanied by a lively brook flowing alongside and the harmonious songs of birds filling the atmosphere, resulting in a tranquil and immersive experience. Upon completing your hike, you will reunite with your driver and vehicle to proceed on your journey by road to the picturesque Punakha Valley. On the way, you will pause at mitsana village and embark on a 20-minutes’ walk to Chimi Lhakhang, a fertility temple dedicated to the divine madman, Lama Drukpa Kuenley. Individual from all over the nation visit to receive fertility blessings. If you desire, you may obtain a blessing from the Lama’s wooden phallus! Overnight stay in Punakha.
Day 3: Punakha to Phobjikha, 78 Km/ 2-3 hours
Today before you proceed to Phobjikha, you will drive to Nyizergang and embark on a 30-minute uphill hike to the Khamsum Yuelley Namgayl chorten, which prominently stands on a picturesque ridge above the Punakha valley. This temple was built by Her Majesty the Queen Mother, Ashi Tshering Yangdon Wangchuck, and is dedicated to the well-being of the kingdom, its citizens, and all sentient beings. The best views of the Punakha Valley can be enjoyed from the temple’s summit. After exploring the temple, you will hike back to the parking area and drive back and visit the Punakha Dzong, constructed in 1637 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. This fortress is remarkably positioned between the male and female rivers, resembling an anchored ship. After lunch, take a picturesque drive to Phobjikha/Gangtey, which is well-known as a winter habitat for the Black-necked Cranes, with approximately 300 cranes residing there each winter. The route from Punakha traverses Wangduephodrang, the last town before central Bhutan. The district is famous for its fine bamboo craftsmanship and stone carving. From Wangduephodrang, the road winds up through dense forests of oak and rhododendrons till Lawala pass, which is blanketed with dwarf bamboos. The pass offers panoramic views of the Himalayan Mountains. Drive downhill for little while and you will be awestricken by the stunning views of Gangtey Goenpa and Phobjikha Valley. Upon reaching your destination, set out on a 1.5-hour hike along the Gangtey Natural Trail, which winds through pine and bamboo forests, presenting breathtaking views of the Phobjikha Valley and creating an unforgettable experience for nature enthusiasts. Following the hike, you will visit the Black-necked crane information center. Overnight stay in Phobjikha.
Day 4: Phobjikha to Bumthang, 188 Km/ 6 hours
Today, you will embark on a drive to Bumthang, recognized as the spiritual heartland of Bhutan. This journey will take you through the picturesque Trongsa region along a winding road that ascends to Pele La Pass at an elevation of 3,300 meters, before descending into semi-tropical vegetation and alpine environment, with rhododendron trees and dark green dwarf bamboo. You will stop by at Chendebji Chhorten, the chorten is patterned after Swayambhunath in Kathmandu and was built in 19th century to cover the remains of an evil spirit that was killed at this spot. As you enter Trongsa valley, the huge fortress of Trongsa Dzong, the most impressive Dzong in Bhutan appears on the far side of a deep valley. Trongsa, is ancestral home of the Kings. Both the first and second king of Bhutan ruled the country from this ancient seats. All four kings were invested as Trongsa Penlop (governor) prior to ascending the throne. You will visit Trongsa Dzong, the masterpiece of Bhutanese architecture. The Dzong was built in 1648, and it was the seat of power over central and eastern Bhutan. Following your exploration of the Dzong, you will proceed to over Yotong La Pass at 3,450 meters into Bumthang District, with a planned stop at a traditional yathra weaving factory to witness the local textile craftsmanship. Upon your arrival, you will check into your hotel for an overnight stay in Bumthang
Day 5: Bumthang.
Today in Bumthang, you will have the opportunity to discover some of Bhutan’s most revered sites, beginning with Tamshing Lhakhang, famous for its exquisite religious Buddhist paintings. Followed by Zhugdra, or Chung Drag, one of the four sacred cliffs in Bumthang valley, located just 45 minutes from Chamkhar town. Blessed by Guru Rinpoche, this revered site served as a meditation cliff where treasure discoverers like Terton Pema Lingpa revealed numerous sacred treasures. The site features a meditation cave and relics such as Guru Rinpoche’s handprints, footprints, body print, and holy water, making it a vital spiritual and historical location in Bhutan. Following this, you will proceed to Kurjey Lhakhang, a significant pilgrimage destination where Guru Rinpoche left his body imprints during his meditation in a cave. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to visit a local farmhouse, where you can experience authentic Bhutanese hospitality and taste traditional local dishes, offering you a deep and flavorful insight into the region’s rich culinary culture. In the afternoon, you will explore Jambay Lhakhang, one of the oldest monasteries that dates back to the introduction of Buddhism in Bhutan, and subsequently visit Mebar Tsho, known as the Burning Lake, where treasures belonging to Guru Rinpoche were revealed in the 15th century by Pema Lingpa. Day 6: Bumthang to Mongar, 198 km/ 6-7hours.
Your journey to eastern Bhutan begins with a traverse through Ura village, renowned for its medieval charm, cobblestone streets, and the traditional clothing of the women, offering a glimpse into the region’s rich cultural heritage. The six-hour drive today is full of excitement, especially at Thrumshing La pass at 3750 meters, where you can pause to stretch your legs and take in the breathtaking vistas. As you descend beyond the pass, you’ll enter the eastern district, which is markedly different from the western and central regions in terms of development and lifestyle. Your day concludes with an overnight stay in Mongar, where you can relax and immerse yourself in the local ambiance.
Day 7: Mongar to Tarashigang, 90 km/ 3 hours
Your expedition today guides you through the picturesque Kori La pass, standing at 2,450 meters, adorned with vibrant chortens and mani walls, before you descend through Yadi village and cross the Sheri Chhu river. A brief diversion takes you to Drametse Monastery, a significant religious site established in the 16th century, famous for the Drametse Nga Cham mask dance, which UNESCO has recognized as a masterpiece of intangible cultural heritage. Following a delightful packed picnic lunch, you will proceed with your journey to Trashigang, where you can unwind and immerse yourself in the lively local atmosphere. Overnight stay in Trashigang.
Day 8: Trashigang to Sakteng, 60 km/ 2-3 hours
Today you will drive to Sakteng. The road is mostly bumpy no tar farm road. The people (Brokpa tribe) living in Sakteng area are semi-nomadic yak herders with a unique and fascinating culture in the world. They speak a different dialect, have their own deities and wear a unique style of dress. They wear headgear made out of yak hair with five tentacles designed to draw away the rain. Day 9: Sakteng | Attend the Great Yeti Quest Festival
Today you will attend The Great Yeti Quest Festival Tour in Sakteng, a unique cultural celebration in Eastern Bhutan that highlights the legendary Yeti folklore and the rich traditions of the Brokpa people. The festival brings together vibrant cultural performances including traditional dances, folk music, storytelling, and community gatherings that showcase authentic Bhutanese heritage. Overnight stay in Sakteng at Farmhouse.
Day 10: Sakteng to Trashigang, 60 km/ 2-3 hours
Today, you will explore Sakten village, and your interactions with the locals will enrich your cultural experience. Moreover, the local hospitality is sure to be a rewarding aspect of your visit. After lunch, the drive back to Trashigang will provide a moment to reflect on the day’s activities while enjoying the stunning beauty of the region. Day 11: Trashigang to Paro | Domestic flight to Paro
After breakfast, you will drive to Yonphula airport for your flight to Paro. After lunch, you can visit Kyichu Lhakhang, the oldest and most sacred temple in the country built by the Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo in 8th century, and visit the Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche Memorial House. The Memorial House in Kyichu, Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche’s primary residence in Bhutan, was inaugurated as a museum and opened to the public in 2010 to celebrate his centennial. It has been preserved almost exactly as it was when he lived there. Khyentse Rinpoche was one of the main spiritual teachers of the Bhutanese Royal Family. The house includes the reception room where Rinpoche gave private audiences and teachings and his bedroom where he meditated daily and recited prayers, visit the Rinpung Dzong meaning “fortress of the heap of jewels”. It has a long and fascinating history. Along the wooden galleries lining the courtyard of the Rinpung Dzong are fine wall paintings illustrating Buddhist lore. You will walk downhill till the road point crossing the wooden bridge. Your vehicle will be waiting here to take you to Paro town. Walking through the market and meeting with the people will be an enjoyable experience. Overnight stay in Paro.
Day 12: Paro | Hike to Tiger’s Nest Monastery
In the morning you will hike to Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest) Monastery, which is Bhutan’s most famous monastery situated at 3180 meters. Guru Rinpoche (spiritual master) is said to have flown on the back of a tigress from Singye Dzong in Lhuntse to meditate in a cave where Taktsang Monastery now stands. The Monastery is perched on the edge of a steep cliff, about 900 meters above Paro Valley. Lunch will be served at the Cafeteria. Explore the monastery and hike back to the valley in the afternoon. Overnight stay in Paro.
Day 13: Depart Paro
Drive to the airport for departure. Our representative will bid you farewell.
