Merak Sakten Trek

Trip Overview

The Merak Sakten Trek offers a rare cultural adventure into the far eastern wilderness of Bhutan, within the protected Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary. Unlike other treks that focus solely on alpine landscapes, this journey introduces visitors to the semi-nomadic Brokpa community, known for their unique traditions, yak-based lifestyle, and vibrant attire. Spanning 5–6 days, the trek begins in Chaling (Trashigang) and winds through rhododendron forests, rolling pastures, and high ridges before reaching the remote villages of Merak and Sakten. Along the way, trekkers are treated to dramatic views of the eastern Himalayas, sightings of rare birds and flora, and warm hospitality from the Brokpas. Culturally rich and moderately challenging, the Merak Sakten Trek is perfect for those looking to explore Bhutan’s untouched eastern frontiers and experience life far removed from the modern world.
