Wangduephodrang

Wangduphodrang is the last western town before entering central Bhutan. It is hot in summer, being at the same elevation of Punakha. The impressive Wangdue dzong, located on a ridge that looks like a reclining elephant, looms above the highway. The dzong was destroyed in a fire in 2012, but the entire country supported national efforts to rebuild to its former glory upon Royal Command. Wangdue is known for its fine bamboo works and slate carving.
